Loimme hankkeessa mobiilin tietotyön konteksteja kuvaavan kehikon Soikkelin ym. (2012) artikkelin pohjalta.
Static and dynamic NMR properties of gas-phase xenon
Abstract
This thesis presents computational studies of both the static and dynamic parameters
of the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy of gaseous xenon.
First, state-of-the-art static magnetic resonance parameters are computed in small
xenon clusters by using methods of quantum chemistry, and second, time-dependent
relaxation phenomena are investigated via molecular dynamics simulations
at different experimental conditions. Based on the underlying quantum and
classical mechanics concepts, computational methods represent a procedure complementary
to experiments for investigating the properties of atoms, molecules,
clusters and solids.
Static NMR spectral parameters, chemical shift, shielding anisotropy and asymmetry
parameter, nuclear quadrupole coupling, and spin-rotation coupling, are
calculated using different electronic structure methods ranging from the uncorrelated
Hartree-Fock method to correlated second-order Møller-Plesset many-body
perturbation, complete/restricted active space multiconfiguration self-consistent
field, and to coupled-cluster approaches. The bond length dependence of these
properties is investigated in the xenon dimer (Xe2). A well-characterized property
in experimental NMR, the second virial coefficient of nuclear shielding, is
theoretically calculated by a variety of methods and convincingly verified against
experimental findings. Here, it is mandatory to include effects from special relativity
as well as electron correlation. As a side result, a purely theoretical potential
energy curve for Xe2, comparable to best experimental ones, is calculated.
A pairwise additive scheme is established to approximate the NMR properties in
differently coordinated sites of xenon clusters Xen (n = 2 - 12). Especially the
pairwise additive chemical shift values are found to be in close agreement with
quantum-chemical results and only a small scaling factor close to unity is needed
for the correct behavior. Finally, a dynamical magnetic resonance property, the
experimental nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate R1 of monoatomic Xe gas due to
the chemical shift anisotropy (CSA) mechanism is validated from first principles.
This approach is based on molecular dynamics simulations over a large range of
temperatures and densities, combined with the pairwise additive approximation
for the shielding tensor. Therein, the shielding time correlation function is seen
to reflect the characteristic time scales related to both interatomic collisions and
cluster formation. For the first time, the physics of gaseous xenon is detailed in
full in the context of CSA relaxation
The purpose of the thesis was to find out the standards used in designing hy-draulic cylinders. The objective was to clarify the quality and quality manage-ment system in the designing process of the cylinders. With this thesis it would be easier for a designer to understand the designing process and quality sys-tem requirements in today's design environment.
Different cylinder types are described in this thesis to help designers in their work and decisions. The theory of designing and the key areas of cylinder de-sign are described in this thesis. Also the customer requirements associated with quality management are studied according to the standards.
There are the main contents, methods and requirements for quality manage-ment found in the quality management system standard SFS-EN ISO 9001. There are many standards for hydraulic cylinders. The references and guide-lines for different structures and cylinders dimensioning were found in the standards. The main sizing points of the hydraulic cylinder were calculated with the help of the example cylinder model.
Depending on the types of cylinders and intended use of the cylinders the de-signer has to do many different choices and sizing calculations. When the quality management system is in the key role in the design process, both the company and customers can get high quality products and services
Polarization transfer in a spin-exchange optical-pumping experiment
Abstract
Spin-exchange optical pumping (SEOP) enables hyperpolarization of magnetic noble gas nuclei and allows enormously enhanced signal in nuclear magnetic resonance studies in materials, biosciences, and medicine. We model the dynamics of the SEOP process taking place in a Rb−129Xe gas mixture and shed light on how the different microscopic processes influence the macroscopic polarization transfer. For each Rb-Xe collision taking place in simulated molecular dynamics trajectory, we sample a time series of quantum-chemically preparametrized Hamiltonians. Combined electron and nuclear spin dynamics of each event is propagated by solving the corresponding Liouville–von Neumann equation. The rarely occurring, long-lived van der Waals molecules are seen to give the most significant contribution to polarization transfer under the simulated conditions (T=300 K, p=2.4 bar), in agreement with earlier findings. Besides the lifetime of the collision complex, the average and minimum Rb-Xe interatomic distances characterize the efficiency of the polarization transfer events. We obtain insight into magnetization transfer in both individual binary collisions and van der Waals complexes and demonstrate a stepwise buildup of 129Xe spin polarization upon bond-length oscillations in the latter
Dipolar Relaxation of Water Protons in the Vicinity of a Collagen-like Peptide
Quantitative magnetic resonance imaging is one of the few available methods for noninvasive diagnosis of degenerative changes in articular cartilage. The clinical use of the imaging data is limited by the lack of a clear association between structural changes at the molecular level and the measured magnetic relaxation times. In anisotropic, collagen-containing tissues, such as articular cartilage, the orientation dependency of nuclear magnetic relaxation can obscure the content of the images. Conversely, if the molecular origin of the phenomenon would be better understood, it would provide opportunities for diagnostics as well as treatment planning of degenerative changes in these tissues. We study the magnitude and orientation dependence of the nuclear magnetic relaxation due to dipole-dipole coupling of water protons in anisotropic, collagenous structures. The water-collagen interactions are modeled with molecular dynamics simulations of a small collagen-like peptide dissolved in water. We find that in the vicinity of the collagen-like peptide, the dipolar relaxation of water hydrogen nuclei is anisotropic, which can result in orientation-dependent relaxation times if the water remains dose to the peptide. However, the orientation-dependency of the relaxation is different from the commonly observed magic-angle phenomenon in articular cartilage MRI
Sensitivity of ab Initio vs Empirical Methods in Computing Structural Effects on NMR Chemical Shifts for the Example of Peptides
The structural sensitivity of NMR
chemical shifts as computed by
quantum chemical methods is compared to a variety of empirical approaches
for the example of a prototypical peptide, the 38-residue kaliotoxin KTX comprising 573 atoms. Despite the simplicity of empirical
chemical shift prediction programs, the agreement with experimental
results is rather good, underlining their usefulness. However, we
show in our present work that they are highly insensitive to structural
changes, which renders their use for validating predicted structures
questionable. In contrast, quantum chemical methods show the expected
high sensitivity to structural and electronic changes. This appears
to be independent of the quantum chemical approach or the inclusion
of solvent effects. For the latter, explicit solvent simulations with
increasing number of snapshots were performed for two conformers of
an eight amino acid sequence. In conclusion, the empirical approaches
neither provide the expected magnitude nor the patterns of NMR chemical
shifts determined by the clearly more costly ab initio methods upon
structural changes. This restricts the use of empirical prediction
programs in studies where peptide and protein structures are utilized
for the NMR chemical shift evaluation such as in NMR refinement processes,
structural model verifications, or calculations of NMR nuclear spin
relaxation rates
